Norris: Team Orders Hurt Sao Paulo Sprint Result
McLaren's Lando Norris expressed his frustration after being instructed to hold position during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix Sprint, believing it ultimately hurt his team's overall result.
Norris, who qualified in P4, was told to stay behind teammate Oscar Piastri during the sprint race, despite having the faster car. This decision ultimately prevented Norris from challenging for a podium finish, with both McLaren drivers finishing outside the top five.
"I think we could have had a better result," Norris stated after the race. "I was on the pace, and we were definitely capable of fighting for a podium."
He elaborated on his perspective, saying, "It was a bit frustrating. I think we could have had a much better result if I had been allowed to race Oscar. But the team made the decision, and we have to respect it."
While Norris acknowledged the team's rationale, he was adamant that his speed would have benefited McLaren. "They were just worried about a potential collision," Norris explained. "But I think I could have managed the situation. We lost a bit of time today, but it's all part of the game."
Piastri, who finished P5, echoed Norris' sentiment, stating that he understood the team's approach but ultimately agreed with his teammate's assessment. "I understand why the team made the decision," Piastri said. "But looking back, I think Lando could have been more aggressive. He was quicker, and he could have probably overtaken me without any issues."
Despite the disappointment over the team orders, both Norris and Piastri remain optimistic about McLaren's future. The team has shown strong progress this season and are eager to continue their upward trajectory.
The Sao Paulo Grand Prix Sprint showcased McLaren's potential, but also highlighted the need for strategic flexibility and open communication between drivers and the team. Moving forward, McLaren will strive to balance team strategy with individual driver performance to maximize their results in the remaining races of the season.
