Veteran Spotlight: Ammie Jo Carter, Hokie
Ammie Jo Carter is not your typical college student. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, she brings a unique perspective and a wealth of experience to Virginia Tech, where she's pursuing a degree in Human Development with a focus on Family Studies and Human Services.
From Active Duty to Academia:
Ammie Jo's journey to Virginia Tech began with a commitment to service. After graduating high school, she joined the Air Force, serving as a Security Forces Specialist for four years. During her time in the military, she honed valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving, qualities that have proven invaluable in her academic pursuits.
"The Air Force taught me discipline, resilience, and how to adapt to any situation," says Ammie Jo. "Those are the skills that have helped me transition back to civilian life and thrive in the academic environment."
Finding Her Passion in Human Development:
While serving in the Air Force, Ammie Jo developed a passion for helping others, particularly families and children. Witnessing the challenges faced by military families ignited a desire to dedicate her career to improving their lives.
"Seeing firsthand the impact of military deployments on families solidified my interest in family studies," explains Ammie Jo. "I want to use my knowledge and experience to support families and create positive change within communities."
Embracing the Hokie Spirit:
As a Hokie, Ammie Jo is actively engaged in campus life. She is a member of the Student Veterans of America (SVA), a group that provides support and resources to student veterans. She also volunteers with the Hokie Family Assistance Program, helping families in need.
Looking Ahead:
Ammie Jo's goals extend beyond her academic pursuits. She plans to pursue a career in social work, focusing on family and children's services, aiming to make a tangible difference in the lives of those around her.
"My military experience taught me the importance of service," says Ammie Jo. "I'm excited to continue serving my community in a new capacity, helping families navigate life's challenges and create a brighter future."
